Tendai Chitewere

Tendai Chitewere is director of the Center for Science and Mathematics Education and professor of Geography in the School of the Environment at San Francisco State University.

Tendai grew up in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe’s Vumba Mountains and Chimanimani National Park. She loved the natural environment and was fascinated by the geology and fauna that surrounded her childhood. Her curiosity about the world around her made choosing a STEM career predictable, but not easy. Thanks to a passion for learning and supportive mentors she completed her undergraduate degree in water resources and masters in agricultural engineering. A committed environmentalist, she pursued a doctorate in anthropology and conducted ethnographic research in an ecovillage. Her research is an examination of sustainable community efforts in the United States and Germany where she is broadly interested in the intersection of environmentalism, community, and justice.

She lives in Oakland, California where she grows much of her own food, keeps chickens and honey bees.
