Melting Land Ice vs. Sea Ice
This model demonstrates how melting polar ice affects global sea levels.
What you need: Two shallow containers or bowls, modeling clay, ice cubes, and water.
How to do it:
In the first container, press a lump of clay onto one side to act as land. Place ice cubes directly on top of the clay "land." Pour water into the other empty side of the container up to a marked line.
In the second container, place equal-sized ice cubes directly into the water to represent floating sea ice.
Leave both containers in a warm room and watch what happens as the ice melts.
Notice how only the ice melting on top of the land (the first container) causes the overall water level to rise significantly.
