Near Peer Mentors
SAfG administers a Near Peer leadership program where high school girls serve as assistants and mentors in our TK–6 afterschool STEM programs. This experience helps participants build confidence, communication, and leadership skills while deepening their own engagement in STEM. At the same time, younger students benefit from having a role model who is closer to their age—someone they can see themselves in. The result is a powerful, supportive learning environment that inspires girls at every stage. It’s truly a win-win!
SAfG Near Peer Opportunities!
SAfG recruits High School Students to join our afterschool team as a Near Peers (NPs) a paid opportunity open to girls and girl-identifying youth ages 15+. As an Near Peer, you’ll become a teaching mentor who inspires and supports elementary-age girls (TK–6th grade) as they discover the exciting world of STEM through hands-on activities and real curiosity. This is an in-person classroom role at public schools in Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley, and Emeryville, with sessions running 7–10 weeks long. You’ll volunteer just two hours per week, build leadership and mentoring skills, and make a real impact—no STEM expertise required, just basic knowledge, enthusiasm, and a love of working with kids.
