Volunteer Substitute Teaching Assistant

Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking energetic Volunteer Substitute Teaching Assistants to engage elementary-aged girls and support Head Teachers in teaching hands-on STEM activities in-person at public schools in the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond). If you’re passionate about helping shape our next generation of scientists - we'd love to have you! All classes are fun, hands-on and designed to inspire girls to love STEM!

LOGISTICS:

  • Volunteer, on-call as needed.

  • Hours: after school hours (approximately 2 - 5:30pm)

  • Days: Monday through Friday

  • Timeframe: February - May 2024

  • Start Date: As soon as the post is filled

  • Schools: Elementary schools in Richmond and Oakland

  • Expectation:

    ○ 1) Have a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license to get to the school sites.

The STEM Teaching Assistant will report directly to the Director of Programs. For more of an understanding about our after school program, check-out what our classes look like: SAfG in Action!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to urgent call-outs and serve as substitute teaching assistant with little notice

  • Serve as support to Head Teachers to deliver project-based, in-person STEM lessons

  • Read the facilitator guide for the science project and coordinate with the Head teacher ahead of class time regarding the project for each class and how you can best assist.

  • Facilitate Social Emotional Learning portions in each lesson

  • Take photos during class to provide to the Head Teacher who will share with the parents/caregivers.

  • Actively build relationships with students, focusing on socio-emotional development and individual strengths

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with children in some capacity

  • Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls

  • Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm

  • Possess a valid driver's license and a reliable car

ABOUT US:

SAfG serves girls in K through 6th grades. Our mission is to remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM starting in kindergarten by introducing, sparking and building their interest through hands-on learning. Our programs increase their positive attitudes toward STEM and equip them with 21st century skills. In schools throughout the East Bay, SAfG provides hands-on, high quality after-school STEM programming while girls are young so they’ll stay engaged in STEM for the long term.
