Our School Year in Review: Increased Access to SAfG Programming!

Making the Best of a Challenging Year

In March 2020, our year-long lockdown started, triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. With in-person education on pause, Stephanie Lauenstein, SAfG’s Director of Programs, pivoted and started to email the last winter session lesson “Lunch in Space” as an illustrated step-by-step guide to SAfG families. Our families were receptive and responded with gratitude. Encouraged by the positive feedback, we developed more virtual programs!

The spring 2020 after-school program turned into ZOOM-based, STEM-kit-supported lessons with built-in flexibility for pandemic-shaken families. Our weekly newsletters delivered easy-to-do STEM activities to families, and in June 2020 a free ZOOM-based STEAM summer camp was launched.

The positive responses from our SAfG families helped us garner financial support among SAfG grantors and school partners. With a successful teaching model in place, SAfG expanded its after-school education to 10 additional school sites in the 2020/2021 school year. SAfG recognized that youth needed to develop tech-savviness and launched a fun, cutting-edge, virtual engineering and technology curriculum. All lessons were STEM-kit-supported and hands-on with Role Models, and later Near Peers in each lesson.

SAfG also converted the formerly school-based family STEAM events to virtual family STEAM nights.

In collaboration with partners such as Stanford University, Berkeley National Labs, Chabot Space and Science, Community Resources for Science, and Sandia Laboratories, SAfG offered six STEAM nights, each drawing more than 100 families that enjoyed the events greatly.

The virtual STEAM nights have been so popular among families that they will continue as a new SAfG program in the school year 2021/22.

SAfG school-year programming is concluding at the end of May, but summer programming is fast-approaching. Thanks to all the families, students, partners, donors, and volunteers who made this school year a wonderful success. The team at Scientific Adventures for Girls is looking forward to continuing programming with the community as a safer, healthier future approaches.
