Commemorates the Contributions of Female American Civilians

The Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park commemorates the contributions of American civilians during World War II, with a special focus on the roles of women. Through exhibits, guided tours, and educational programs, the Park preserves the rich history of the Home Front and celebrates the spirit of the "We Can Do It!"

Recognize the Woman Who Expanded the Universe of Possibility

Mae Jemison is a physician, engineer, educator, and astronaut who made history as the first woman of color to go into space. She founded the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, a nonprofit that creates and runs hands-on STEM learning experiences. Dr. Jemison inspires us not only through her groundbreaking achievements but also through her lifelong curiosity, innovation, and dedication to expanding opportunities in STEM.

Get the whole family involved in creating and experimenting with fun, hands-on STEM activities! This season, Scientific Adventures for Girls wants to share all the concepts of simple machines that our girls are learning in class, so you can try them at home. Concepts include gear, lever, inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axle, screw, and wedges. Let’s explore these together.

Lever: Lift It Like an Engineer
|
A lever helps lift heavy objects using a long bar and a pivot point (called a fulcrum). It makes work easier by spreading out the force. What Kids Learn How force and balance work. Moving the fulcrum changes how easy it is to lift something. This is the same principle used in see-saws, crowbars, and bottle openers.

Inclined Plane: The Ramp Challenge
|
|
An inclined plane is a slanted surface that makes it easier to move objects to a higher place. What Kids Learn Ramps reduce the force needed to move something upward. The longer the ramp, the easier the climb. Engineers use inclined planes in wheelchair ramps, slides, and roads up mountains.

A pulley uses a wheel and rope to help lift objects by changing the direction of the force. What Kids Learn Pulleys make it easier to lift heavy loads. They change the direction of the force (pulling down to lifting up). Used in construction cranes, flagpoles, and elevators.

Explore Simple Machines Together With Your Children
|
|
A simple machine is a tool that helps us do work more easily. Instead of lifting, pushing, or pulling something the hard way, a simple machine makes it easier, faster, or smarter. Think of it like a “helper tool” that gives your hands, arms, or muscles a little extra power.

|
Now, as your kids learn what simple machines are and how they help humans get things done, your kids are ready to act as little engineers. We invite you to start building the hands-on projects listed above and discover the physics behind simple machines. They can use their projects to perform duties at home. Good luck building!
