Happy Women’s Empowerment Month!

At SAfG we celebrate women in STEM year-round, but we’ll happily take an excuse to elevate it! We have SO MANY ways to get involved this month and make a direct impact inspiring and engaging young girls (and their families!) Read below for more information on:

being a female in STEM ROLE MODEL for an afternoon or a classroom assistant for 7 afternoons.
engaging family learning by facilitating an activity table at one of our four Family Science Nights this month

SAfG is also going to be at a variety of FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS around the East Bay this month. Bring the family to:

Drake’s Dealership - We’ll be at the restaurant/taproom Thurs March 5th and 26th with Lego activities for all ages!
Alameda Free Library March 7th with hands-on Neuroscience activities for kids and families.

Finally, this is the last month left to turn your Target spending into funds for girls in STEM - make sure to send those Target Circle community points to SAFG!

Engaging Families in Science

We had a wonderful Family Engineering Night at Hoover Elementary!

SAfG staff was joined by volunteer partners from AIM High and Sandia who helped facilitate our Squishy Circuits, Earthquake-proof Building, and Paper Bridge activities.

Community, parent, and high school volunteers were also critical to make the night a success! Keep reading to find out how to get involved in our upcoming Family Science Nights.

SHAAAAAARKS!

As part of our incredible partnership with the Sharks this year, about 40 team members from the Sharks Foundation assembled three different sharks and hockey related activities into kits for 950 girls! These activities are sure to keep the girls engaged in STEM through their summer break

Volunteer Opportunities

Single-day opportunity:
Inspire girls and play with SLIME!

Single-day opportunity:
Family STEM Night Volunteer!

Assignments include:

Facilitating one of 10 STEM activity tables (training before the event starts)
Setting/Cleaning up
Serving pizza

In high school? Ages 15+ are welcome to volunteer. Ages 13-14 are welcome with an accompanying adult.

Washington Elementary (Richmond) - “Science in your Home - Earth Day”

7 week commitment:
Be a Classroom Volunteer!

Have an hour free on a weekday afternoon? We have space for weekly classroom assistants for our 7 week unit - Chemistry of Slime!

👩🏽‍🏫Support head teachers in hands-on STEM lessons
🧪Engaging the girls in hands-on STEM activities (Legos and Slime!)
🌟Be a role model for K-6th grade girls

Example open assignments:

Oakland Academy of Knowledge (Oakland)
- Wednesdays, April 1st-May 18th
- 4:30-5:30pm
Washington Elementary (Richmond)
- Fridays, April 17th-June 5th
- 3:00-4:00pm (TK-1st grade) AND/OR
- 4:15-5:15pm (2nd-4th grade)
