Wow, the end of the year already? SAfG girls had an incredible year of STEM learning, exploring a range of topics from chemistry through slime, simple machines through Legos, and learning from nature through biomimicry. The girls also met Role Models (women in STEM careers), were supported by teen volunteer mentors, and built confidence in themselves as scientists!

SAfG Stories

Honoring a Year of STEM Success Onboard the USS Hornet!

On May 9th, SAfG girls and their families came together to celebrate 27 weeks of STEM exploration, creativity, and discovery aboard the USS Hornet. We heard from 3 amazing women in STEM careers, explored a historic ship, engaged in STEAM activities from 3D printing to color-changing slime, and distributed awesome raffle prizes like a telescope!
Thank you to everyone who joined us and to all of our families for an amazing year.

Your Impact on Maya’s STEM Journey🌱

Maya has been part of SAfG since she was five years old. Now, as she prepares to enter sixth grade and complete her final year in the program, she admits she was feeling emotional about leaving.
“I was really sad,” she shared. “SAfG has been such a big part of my life.”
But that sadness quickly turned into excitement when she remembered she could return as a Near Peer — mentoring younger girls and helping in the classroom, just as older students had once helped her.
“I love science, and we don’t get enough of it in school,” Maya said. “I wish every class could be science! I’m going to help the younger girls just like I was helped.”
Over the years, Maya has grown from a curious kindergartener into a confident young scientist and leader. Now, she’s ready to inspire the next generation of girls to ask questions, explore boldly, and discover that science belongs to them too. Thank you for supporting our girls as they continue down their STEM path.

Free Library Event: Discover Nature’s Superheroes🕷️🌿

Join Scientific Adventures for Girls at the Alameda Free Library for a hands-on adventure into the world of biomimicry! Discover how amazing ideas in science and technology are completely inspired by nature, animals, and insects.

This is a FREE, drop-in program for all ages—no registration required!

Hammer, Saw, and Construct Your Own Adventure 🔨🪚

The Adventure Playground is a unique, entirely free, outdoor facility for encouraging constructive, sensory-driven play.

Real Tools for Kids: Children are provided with actual hammers, saws, nails, and paint to modify and build onto the constantly evolving wooden forts and climbing structures.

Teamwork Focus: Encourages collaboration among kids as they swap found materials, design new features, and learn basic physical-building concepts.

Experience Interactive Coastal Exploration at Crab Cove

Perched right on the bayfront in Alameda, the visitor center at Crab Cove specializes in teaching families about marine biology and local coastal ecosystems.

Interactive Aquariums: Check out an 800-gallon tank featuring native Bay fish, touch-screen exhibits and micro-aquariums.

Public Feeding Viewings: Free, family-friendly live fish-feeding demonstrations where naturalists explain local marine food webs.

Beach Exploration: Enjoy a protected shoreline where kids can safely explore mudflats, view shorebirds, and search for crabs at low tide.

Blast Off Into STEM Wars Adventures! 🛸

Star Wars is more than an epic space adventure; it’s a launchpad for exploring real-world science and engineering across the universe. From crafting glowing mini LED lightsabers with simple materials to launching starfighter-inspired paper aircraft and mixing up cosmic galaxy slime, these 3 STEM Wars hands-on activities will ignite curiosity faster than lightspeed. Here’s a sneak peek of one of them:

STEM Wars: Design and Build Your Own Light-Up Lightsaber. This mini LED lightsaber project is a fun, beginner-friendly introduction to the basics of electrical circuits. By building a simple light-up device, kids learn how batteries, LEDs, and conductive materials work together to create a working circuit. Inspiring Young Scientists Through Stories & Mentorship

At Scientific Adventures for Girls, we believe STEM learning becomes even more powerful when girls can learn alongside relatable mentors and inspiring role models. That’s why we are excited to spotlight Mina's Magic Microscope: A Beginner’s Guide to Biology by K.E. Ruhm— a fun introduction to biology that encourages curiosity, exploration, and scientific discovery among young learners.

K.E. Ruhm isn’t just a budding STEM children’s author; she is also an SAfG Near Peer! Near Peers are teen volunteers who support teachers and students in their after-school STEM classes. They help create encouraging learning environments where girls can build confidence, ask questions, and see themselves in STEM.

Through storytelling, mentorship, and hands-on learning, we continue working toward our mission of expanding STEM opportunities for girls and underrepresented youth. 💛
