Throughout the year Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) offers after school programs throughout the East Bay. Reaching hundreds of young girls per year, SAfG exposes numerous science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines through meaningful hands-on projects such as building a surgical tool to extract bad cells from a model chest cavity; designing and engineering model sustainable playgrounds; or making potions to learn the basics of chemical reactions.
SAfG's highly-qualified teachers spend time not only introducing STEM concepts to the kids but also value the importance of creating an environment that promotes community, collaboration, persistence, determination and making mistakes to learn STEM. By the end of each program you will see that the group of girls have transformed into a tighter-knit more resilient community than when they started.
SAfG classes also help the girls connect their learning to the practical world by inviting the amazing women in STEM fields all over the Bay Area to our classes. After girls meet with these female role models, they will have learned about new career options. For example, did you know there is such a thing as a Flavor Scientist? Our girls learned that after meeting with scientists at Clif Bar. The Bay Area is rich with innovation and opportunity, and women from Silicon Valley's Google and Tesla Motors to small start-up bio tech companies in Emeryville or Berkeley are volunteering with SAfG to help empower the young generation of girls.
